Why Grooming Is Part of Dressing Well
The finest suit in the world cannot compensate for unkempt hair, rough skin, or a carelessly maintained beard. Grooming is the foundation upon which all else is built. The good news: a solid grooming routine doesn't require an hour in the bathroom or a cabinet full of products. It requires consistency, the right tools, and a little knowledge.
Step 1: Cleanse — But Don't Over-Wash
Wash your face every morning with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. Avoid using regular bar soap on your face — it strips natural oils and leaves skin dry and reactive. If your skin is oily, opt for a gel cleanser. If it tends toward dryness, use a cream or milk cleanser.
The aim is to remove overnight oils and sweat without disrupting your skin barrier.
Step 2: Moisturise With SPF
This single step makes the biggest long-term difference to your skin's appearance. Apply a lightweight moisturiser with at least SPF 30 every morning — rain or shine, indoors or out. UV exposure is the primary cause of premature skin ageing, and protection costs almost nothing in time or money.
Look for a formula that's non-greasy and absorbs quickly if you plan to follow up with other products or a fragrance.
Step 3: Hair — Know Your Hair Type
There is no single right answer for hair care, because hair types vary enormously. What matters is:
- Using the right shampoo — wash frequency depends on your hair type; fine or oily hair may need daily washing, while thicker or drier hair benefits from every other day or less
- Conditioning regularly — conditioner is not optional; it keeps hair manageable and reduces breakage
- Choosing the right styling product — paste for texture, pomade for shine, clay for matte hold; avoid heavy waxes that build up
Step 4: Beard or Clean Shave — Maintain It Daily
Whether you keep a beard or prefer a clean shave, maintenance is non-negotiable. A scruffy, undefined beard reads as neglect, not effortlessness. A patchy, uneven shave looks rushed.
For the clean shave:
Use a sharp blade (single-blade safety razors deliver closer shaves with less irritation for most skin types), a proper shave cream or soap, and follow up with a light aftershave balm — not an astringent splash, which often does more harm than good.
For the beard:
Trim your neckline and cheek line every two to three days. Use a beard oil to keep the hair soft and the skin beneath hydrated. A well-groomed beard is an intentional statement; a neglected one undermines the whole picture.
Step 5: Fragrance — Less Is More
A signature scent is one of the most powerful tools in a gentleman's grooming arsenal. Apply fragrance to pulse points — wrists, neck, inner elbow — after moisturising. Two or three sprays is enough. Fragrance should be discovered, not announced.
For daytime and office wear, favour lighter, fresher eau de toilette formulas. Reserve heavier, richer eau de parfums for evenings.
